Matías Almeyda is the new coach of Sevilla FC

Multiple sources have confirmed that Almeyda was appointed on June 16, 2025. Sevilla FC made the official announcement, and he will be the seventh Argentine coach to lead the club, following in the footsteps of Helenio Herrera and Jorge Sampaoli.

Matías Almeyda is the new coach of Sevilla FC

The need for a new coach at Sevilla came after Joaquín Caparrós left, who had been the interim coach after Xavier García Pimienta was fired in April 2025. The club ended the 2024/25 La Liga season in a disappointing 17th place, with just 41 points, barely escaping relegation. This poor showing created a need for a coach who has a strong history of turning teams around.

Almeyda’s job is to reorganize a team that is limited by financial issues, as they can only reinvest half of what they make from player sales. His background in handling tough projects, like promoting River Plate and revitalizing AEK Athens, indicates he is well-equipped to tackle Sevilla’s problems. His return to the club as a coach is viewed as a fresh start, with Marca describing it as a strategic decision to rebuild after a tough season.

Matias Almeyda, born on December 21, 1973, in Argentina, is a 51-year-old former football player and current coach. As a player, he was a defensive midfielder and won the Copa Libertadores with River Plate in 1996 before joining Sevilla FC for the 1996/97 season, where he played regularly but faced relegation in La Liga. His coaching career started with River Plate in 2011/12, where he achieved promotion, and he has also coached Banfield, Chivas in Mexico, and AEK Athens in Greece, where he managed 134 matches from 2022 to 2025, notably qualifying for the UEFA Conference League.
