Viktor Gyokeres, a 27-year-old Swedish striker playing for Sporting CP, is in the middle of a big transfer story, with Arsenal and Manchester United showing the most interest.
Since joining Sporting in 2023, Gyökeres has scored an amazing 97 goals in 102 games, making him one of the most wanted forwards in Europe.
There’s a disagreement about a supposed “gentleman’s agreement” that would let him leave for €70m (£59m), even though his release clause is €100m (£84m). Now, Sporting is said to want €80m (£67m), which is causing some tension.
Arsenal seems to be the favorite, as Gyökeres reportedly wants to join the Gunners, but they have cooled their interest because of Sporting’s demands and are also looking at Benjamin Šeško.
Manchester United, whose coach Ruben Amorim used to coach Gyökeres, is less likely to sign him, especially since they didn’t qualify for the Champions League.
Arsenal’s Position: Arsenal has been leading the race, with Gyökeres reportedly wanting to move to the Emirates. There’s a clause that requires Sporting to pay 10% of any rejected offers to Gyökeres’ agent, which puts pressure on the club to accept bids. However, Arsenal has “frozen” talks because of Sporting’s higher demands and is considering RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Šeško as another option. Some reports say a £55m deal could be done soon, but this hasn’t been confirmed.
Manchester United’s Interest: United, managed by Ruben Amorim, who coached Gyökeres at Sporting, were interested but are now less likely to sign him. Gyökeres prefers Arsenal, and United’s lack of Champions League football (after losing the Europa League final) has reduced their chances.
