Over the weekend, it became more and more clear that Alexander Isak really wants to join Liverpool.
He has been unhappy at Newcastle United for a while now, and things have only gotten worse in recent months.
Newcastle refused to give Isak the new contract he was hoping for, and now Liverpool are ready to make their move.
The timing couldn’t be bigger for Liverpool. Luis Díaz has agreed to join Bayern Munich, so the Reds badly need a new forward. And right now, Isak is the name at the top of their list.
Sources say this issue actually started last season. Isak thought his new contract talks would go smoothly, but instead Newcastle gave teammate Anthony Gordon a big new deal that paid him much more.
Inside the Newcastle dressing room, everyone noticed. Isak was still making around £110,000 a week, which is less than even Callum Wilson. This upset Isak’s team because it made them feel like Newcastle didn’t see him as a star player.
Since then, things have been tense. Recent contract talks didn’t go well, and it’s clear now that Newcastle waited too long to fix the problem.
Liverpool have already made their interest known and are expected to send in an official offer soon. Newcastle don’t want to sell, but if Liverpool come in with a huge amount of money, they might have no choice.
Right now, Isak isn’t even training with the Newcastle squad. People close to him say he’s already dreaming of playing at Anfield.
To sign him, Liverpool will probably need to break the British transfer record. Florian Wirtz’s £116.5 million transfer is currently the biggest, but sources say that won’t stop the Reds from spending.
Liverpool are ready to buy, and Isak is ready to leave.
