Liverpool just made a huge move! They’ve officially signed German star midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth £116 million. The Premier League champs will pay £100 million up front, with another £16 million possible through extra bonuses.
This is now Liverpool’s most expensive transfer ever — it beats the record they set when they bought Darwin Nunez from Benfica in 2022.
“I feel super happy and really proud,” Wirtz told Liverpool.com. “I’ve been waiting for this for a long time — now it’s finally done! I can’t wait to start this new adventure.”
Wirtz also said he’s excited to try something different and test himself in the Premier League. “I wanted something new, to leave the Bundesliga and come here. I’ve heard from other players that the Premier League is perfect for me. Every game is great, and I’m really looking forward to my first match.”
Wirtz began his career at Leverkusen when he was only 17. Since then, he’s become one of the top young players in Europe. Last season, he scored 16 goals and had 15 assists as Leverkusen finished second in the Bundesliga and reached the Champions League Round of 16.

But it was the 2023/24 season when Wirtz really shined. He helped Leverkusen win their first-ever Bundesliga title under coach Xabi Alonso. He scored 18 goals, assisted 20 more, and played 49 games in all competitions. He was even named the Bundesliga Player of the Season!
Wirtz also plays for the German national team. He’s made 31 appearances and scored seven goals since debuting in 2021.
“I want to win everything, every year!” Wirtz said. “First, I have to do my job. Last season, Liverpool won the Premier League, so my goal is to win it again — and also go further in the Champions League. I’m really ambitious.”
Wirtz is Liverpool’s second signing from Leverkusen this summer. Full-back Jeremie Frimpong joined the club earlier as well.
