Manchester United might change their plan for goalkeepers after a costly mistake by Altay Bayındır in their 1–0 loss to Arsenal on opening day.
Andre Onana wasn’t in the squad, so Bayındır started. He misjudged a pretty simple corner, and Arsenal scored the winner. It reminded everyone how one small error from a keeper can decide a match, even when the team plays well overall.

United’s staff had already marked goalkeeper as a risk earlier in the summer, and manager Rúben Amorim agreed. He wants a reliable No. 1 who won’t make many mistakes. The club focused more on midfield and attack first, but they have been looking at goalkeepers in the background.
So far, there are three main ideas:
-
Talked with Gianluigi Donnarumma’s camp to see if a deal could be possible.
-
Seriously thought about a loan for Emiliano Martínez.
-
Kept an eye on 23-year-old Senne Lammens from Antwerp as a younger option who could grow into the role.
To bring someone in, United may need to move someone out to save space and wages. There’s even a chance they try to find a new club for Onana—maybe on loan—late in the transfer window.
After the Arsenal game, the pressure is higher. Club leaders will hold new meetings to decide if sticking with the current goalkeepers could hurt their season, and whether they should make a move now.
Rúben Amorim was NOT happy with questions that Tom Heaton should have started over Altay Bayındır… 😳pic.twitter.com/Hf5EY2jwFH
