Newcastle United have added a new defender to their squad: 24-year-old German international Malick Thiaw. He joins from AC Milan. The clubs didn’t share the exact fee, but reports say it’s around £34.6 million (about $46.7 million).
Thiaw played a big role for Milan last season, making 31 appearances in all competitions. He didn’t play as much near the end of their Serie A season, which the team finished in eighth place. He has also played three times for Germany, all in 2023.
Manager Eddie Howe is excited, saying Thiaw is a player he’s liked for a long time and that he’ll bring real quality to the defense.
Thiaw is Newcastle’s third signing of the summer. He follows winger Anthony Elanga (from Nottingham Forest) and goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale (on loan from Southampton). Newcastle finished fifth last season and will play in the Champions League. Their Premier League season starts with an away game at Aston Villa on Saturday.
