Atlético Madrid have officially completed the signing of Argentine playmaker Thiago Almada from Brazilian club Botafogo, marking one of the most intriguing transfers of the 2025 summer window. The deal, announced on July 15, 2025, sees Atlético acquire 50% of Almada’s economic rights for €21 million, with the total fee potentially rising to €26 million through performance-related add-ons.
As part of the agreement, Atlético Madrid are obligated to purchase the remaining 50% of Almada’s rights for €10 million if the player is not sold within the next three years, effectively setting a maximum future outlay of €36 million. Almada has signed a five-year contract until 2030, pending a successful medical.
This move comes after Almada’s impressive loan spell at Lyon in the second half of the 2024–25 season. Despite Lyon’s financial issues preventing a permanent deal, the 23-year-old midfielder featured in 16 Ligue 1 matches, registering one goal and four assists, and attracting interest from several European clubs. Ultimately, Atlético pounced, identifying Almada as the ideal replacement for Ángel Correa, who recently departed for Tigres UANL in Mexico.
Almada’s journey to Europe began with a record-breaking transfer to Botafogo from Atlanta United in July 2024, worth $21 million (potentially $30 million with add-ons) — the most expensive incoming transfer in Brazilian league history. His performances in both Brazil and France showcased his creativity, dribbling ability, and flair, making him a valuable attacking asset.
At Atlético, Almada will be expected to bring dynamism to the midfield and operate in advanced roles, likely under the direction of new tactical systems implemented by manager Diego Simeone or his successor. His arrival adds depth and youthful energy to Atlético’s squad as they look to challenge both domestically and in Europe.
For Almada, this transfer represents a major step forward in his European career and a chance to establish himself at the top level in La Liga.
